I wanted to alert you that on Thursday, 10/15/15, we will have a guest speaker joining us at 2:30 PM in room 575. Her name is Dr. Cathy Olkin. Dr. Olkin is a planetary scientist at Southwest Research Institute in Boulder Colorado and is Deputy Project Scientist on NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto.
Her talk will present selected results from the New Horizons mission. After traveling for more than 9 years and 3 billion miles, NASA’s New Horizons mission flew past Pluto in July of this year. The 7 instruments on board the spacecraft were designed to give a comprehensive view of Pluto and its moons and included visible cameras, an infrared spectrometer, an ultraviolet spectrometer, a radio science experiment, a student-built dust detector and two instruments to measure the plasma environment. This planetary encounter transformed our understanding of Pluto.
This is a great opportunity for students to interact with an influential professional in a science/engineering field. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend.
